The history of Pune begins in the 6th century. It is closely related to the history of Shivaji- The founder of Maratha Empire and the Peshwas- ministers of the Maratha Empire.

Chhatrapati Shivaji
Chhatrapati Shivaji:

Pune gained more importance with the emergence of Chhatrapati Shivaji, who founded the Maratha Empire. Shivaji spent his early childhood in Lal Mahal located in central Pune, built by his father Shahaji. Dadoji Konddev, Shivaji’s mentor, developed the city. He constructed the temple of Lord Ganesh, called Kasba Ganpati. It was in this Lal Mahal where Shivaji attacked Mughals, and cut the fingers of Shahistekhan, uncle of Aurangazeb.

Peshwas:

After death of Shivaji and his son Sambhaji, Peshwas ruled over Pune. Today’s historical place Shaniwarwada was built during the period of Bajirao Peshwa (Senior). Various historical Mahals and buildings were constructed during the period of Peshwas. Senior Bajirao Peshwa expanded the Maratha Empire in North and central provinces. Later, Nanasaheb Peshwa ruled the Maratha Empire. He was more focused towards urbanizing Pune city and encouraged setting up of Peths in Pune. He constructed the famous Parvati temple - Pride of the Pune city. He also constructed water supply system from Katraj Lake that lies to the south of the city.
